A particular advantage off-road is the axle suspension with torque tube, transverse link and coiled springs. This unusual type of suspension for a commercial vehicle enables high spring travel and high axle articulation. Stabilizer bars at the front and rear promote high cornering stability and driving safety.
Axle suspension and torque tube technology.
Advantages at a glance.
- Constant contact with the ground for all four wheels even in extremely uneven terrain
- Progressive spring characteristics for high driving stability in every load condition
- High driving safety even with add-on equipment with a high centre of gravity
Dual circuit brake system, ABS and ALB.
Reliable braking when it counts.
The compressed-air-supported dual-circuit disc braking system brings the Unimog to a safe stop, even on long hills and with heavy loads. Just as reliable in winter as in summer after driving through mud and water. Additional safety and driving stability are provided by the anti-lock braking system (ABS). This allows the wheels to be locked during off-road use and the braking distance to be shortened by forming a wedge of earth.
Advantages at a glance.
- Spring-loaded parking brake for high holding forces with minimum operational force
- ABS actuation of every wheel
- ALB – automatic brake pressure control depending on the load condition
Short frame overhangs.
Easy game in difficult terrain.
With high angles of approach and departure at the front and rear, climbing ability of up to 100 % and fording capability of up to 1.20 m water depth, the Unimog can reach almost any place of operation safely. Thanks to the coiled springs for high spring travel (instead of the leaf springs that are typical for lorries), the Unimog U 4000/U 5000 only has short frame overhangs at the front and rear. As a result, it conquers step ramps and slopes effortlessly. The low vehicle centre of gravity and its extreme torsional flexibility provide additional safety on high uphill and tilting angles.
